How to choose a power inverter

  • Up to about 150 W (plugs into the 12 V socket): phones, laptops, CPAP machines, cameras.
  • 400–750 W: TVs, game consoles, small fridges and slow cookers. Use the battery cables for anything above about 150 W.
  • 1500–2000 W: drip coffee makers, compact microwaves and power tools, one high-draw item at a time.
  • 3000–5000 W: microwave plus coffee maker, fridges, or a full truck-cab or RV setup. You need direct battery wiring, an ANL fuse and a strong battery bank.

Add up the watts you will run at the same time and leave about 20% headroom. Motors can surge to 2–3 times their running watts when they start. Every inverter here is modified sine wave (or doesn't have a published waveform). That works for most chargers, tools, TVs and kitchen appliances, but sensitive medical, audio and variable-speed equipment may need pure sine wave.
